Fabulous 1870s Marcella Bedspread Throw - A Dowry item and Part of a Private country house linen collection.
(History Piqué, or marcella, refers to a weaving style, normally used with cotton yarn, which is characterized by raised parallel cords or geometric designs in the fabric. Piqué fabrics vary from semi-sheer dimity to heavy weight waffle cloth. Twilled cotton and corded cotton are close relatives)
The fabric is pristine without age or storage marks. The weave is exceptionally firm, and the quilted Marcella design is exquisite and without any flattened areas. It looks just as beautiful on it’s reverse too. These items can also be used as wall hangings and add such a luxurious touch to any bohemian antique style home.
The item has two woven outer edges the remaining top and bottom edges have been rolled and hand stitched - this work is without damage or breaks to the threads. The centre is decorated with scrolls and swags within shaped panels. To its outer edges are daisies, the side panels are chequered with lozenge centres.
This throw is a gorgeous size, and has quite a weight to it, so it’s perfect for the warmer nights over a linen sheet.
